Description:
The HFR-TirLig network is part of the CNR-ISMAR network and is built of 5 operational CODAR Seasonde HF Radar systems and 2 Helzel WERA systems to be installed during the year 2026. All the operational stations are collecting hourly surface currents and waves measurements along the coast of the North-Western Tyrrhenian Sea and Ligurian Sea.
The operational network is composed by 2 stations emitting at central frequency of 13.5 MHz and 3 stations emitting at central frequency of 26.275 MHz, providing hourly radial current data with respectively 1,5 km and 1 km range resolution and radial coverage close respectively to 80 km and 40 km.
The combination of radial current measurement provides hourly total current data over a regular grid with 2 km spatial resolution, over a total coverage of approximately 9,000 square km.

Operating Institution:
The HFR-TirLig network has been established, developed and maintained thanks to the Italian flagship project RITMARE, the EU H2020 Jerico-Next, Jerico-S3 and EuroSea projects, the Interreg Italy-France Maritime IMPACT, Sicomar-Plus and SINAPSI projects, the NextGenerationEU ITINERIS and RAISE Italian projects. The HFR-TirLig network is also funded by the Italian National Research Council and the Ministry of University and Research.
The network has been designed, implemented and managed through the efforts of CNR-ISMAR branch of La Spezia. Thanks to Italian Navy, ANAS (the italian concessionaire of the toll-free national road and motorway network), and private citizens, for granting permission to host the instruments on their respective facilities and properties.
